I was the first to spot the potential of the winning book, among the almost two hundred we read, and Roque quickly concurred with my response. His strategies for convincing the other judges drew on his considerable psychological and political savvy. We were excited to award the prize to Diario del Cuartel (Prison Diary) by Uruguayan Carlos María Gutiérrez. In Roque, I felt a kindred spirit. Among foreigners at the time, his family and mine were the only ones I knew who opted for the ration book used by Cuban citizens rather than the special and more generous one offered to nonCubans living in the country for one reason or another.

I mourned the loss of that little mechanical timekeeper as if it were a missing link in my ongoing search for self. That was when you, my darling, bought me a stand-in, visually identical although the mahogany was simulated wood-grain plastic. The face was just as I remembered it, its little cross lines closer and closer to one another as they climbed its narrowing stalk. The same little brass handle protruded from the right side of the case. The same rhythmic click transported me to childhood, assuring me everything would be alright.

The Cuban Revolution of 1959 signaled the possibility for social change throughout Latin America. But Che Guevara’s defeat and death in Bolivia in 1967 caused many to question the foco theory, the idea promoted by the Cubans that a small group of guerilla fighters could become the nucleus of a successful fighting force. Roque’s essay Revolución en la revolución y la crítica de derecha (Revolution in the Revolution and Critique from the Right) was an important contribution to the discussion. Cuba’s Casa de las Américas was, and remains, a vital center of this cultural effervescence.
