Henry David Thoreau, whose afternoon reveries were broken by the hawklike scream of the Fitchburg Railroad passing near Walden Pond, saw the growth of industrialism and the railroad, which went hand in hand, as the demise of agrarianism and independence. “Up comes the cotton, down goes the woolen,” Thoreau observed. ” The growth of the railroads and their influence would continue the rest of Thoreau’s life and beyond.
