Psychoanalytic theory operates in an area of overlap between biological and social accounts of sex and gender difference, where differences between men and women cannot be simply explained one way or the other, either as the pre-determined and natural result of biological difference or the socially determined result of various forms of class, gender, racial and sexual relations.
