One of our battalion commanders, an older major, got riled up during a disagreement with our Luftwaffe hosts. He attempted to win the argument by pulling rank, which was, of course, resented by the other pilots. We younger ones spontaneously took sides with the young Luftwaffe Hauptmann, and I probably went too far.
Overcoming some hesitation, even the regimental commander had joined us. Among those many girls in attendance, there were some beauties that even provoked honest compliments from our usually dour commander. He asked an especially beautiful girl several times for a dance, and it was just the one who, a few weeks later, would oversleep in my apartment. He survived and, after the end of his term, thanked me warmly, both for the experience and for his survival.
