The disease may progress to pneumonia. The appetite is reduced. It is suggested that humans with colds may be able to transmit the infection to chinchillas (Handbook of Rodent and Rabbit Medicine, p. 159). Treatment: Supportive nursing is required, together with the provision of warmth and fluids. If an ocular discharge is present, the eyes should be bathed gently with warm water and an antibiotic preparation applied. Antibiotics (Tx 1±6) should also be given by injection or orally. g. Gastric ulceration is seen in young animals fed abrasive roughage or mouldy food. g. milk of magnesia (Tx 25) is indicated. Kaolin alone or in combination with pectin can be given up to three times a day.
