Nobody controlled it: each day was felt to be a new adventure, affording an opportunity to discover or rediscover ‘lost solidarities’. From one point of view, the human warmth of the strike recalled the protective world of the past. But it unravelled too, as the interests of the different actors diverged. Some categories, such as the foremen, began to feel genuinely uneasy. Others realized they had been caught up in a dispute they didn’t feel was theirs, while the most radical (who were also the best educated) began talking of a wider fight against capitalist society.

Even today, there subsists a lingering atmosphere verging on loathing between strikers and non-strikers. Therefore, we need to penetrate the everyday life of this plant in order to understand just how disruptive a brutal attempt to reassert control over the situation can prove, bearing in mind that no one imagined it could last so long.
