In 1949 he made his first recording in a pop style for the small Jubilee label. In the early 1950s Belafonte was introduced to folk music and began performing this material with a guitarist. His acting career continued to develop, and was given a major boost when director Otto Preminger hired him to appear in the 1955 film Carmen Jones. This led to a recording contract with RCA, and Belafonte’s first album was released in 1956. In early 1957 Belafonte had a major hit with the Calypso-flavored song “Banana Boat (Day-O),” which launched a major craze for the music.
He continued to live in Powell, Missouri, until his death on November 15, 1977. Brumley’s children have all been active in the music business. His son Al Jr. began his performing career in honky-tonk music, primarily working in California. However, for the last two decades, he has made a career out of performing his father’s songs on the gospel circuit. Tom Brumley is perhaps the most famous of Albert’s children; he played steel guitar with Buck Owens’s Buckaroos in the mid-1960s and then cofounded one of the first country rock bands, the Stone Canyon band, with singer Rick Nelson.
