Change You Can Believe In

adamkatz on November 8, 2008

TotSpot is now five-months old. Since launching our public beta in June, TotSpot users (now nearly 25,000 strong) have provided us with great feedback. To our users: You are constructive, helpful, and incredibly patient. Thank you.

Over the past 6 weeks, we’ve been working on an upgrade to TotSpot that incorporates much of this feedback, and more importantly, will enable us to incorporate your future feedback even faster. We’ll be publishing these changes shortly and we thought it a good idea to update you on our goals for the upgrade:

  • Incorporate parents into TotSpot - Our focus at TotSpot remains the kids, but it’s clear to us that having the TotSpot experience flow completely through your child’s identity was cause for confusion. So, we’ve enabled parents to have a basic presence on the site (in the form of a mini-profile and friend relationships) that will make the service much easier to use and TotSpot a much stronger community. What does that mean for you?
  • Login system: Moving forward, you’ll login with your e-mail address rather than your child’s username.
  • Community: Incorporating parents into TotSpot will make it possible to improve the TotSpot community. Expect more community features that will make TotSpot a more rewarding experience.
  • Single Dashboard: Once logged in, there will be no more switching between multiple child accounts and dashboards. Everything you do on TotSpot can be controlled and accessed from a single ‘parent dashboard.’
  • Friendships: Rather than structure friendships through the kids, parents will make friends with other adults. By becoming friends with another parent (adult), you’ll be able to see the profiles of that person’s children and they’ll be able to see the profiles you’ve created.
  • Profiles: Everybody on TotSpot gets a profile. If you’re a parent, your ‘mini-profile’ will contain links to your children’s profiles.
      • Make having more than one child on TotSpot easier - There are a lot of parents out there with more than one child on TotSpot. Right now, TotSpot is way too much of a burden for these users. As of today, each child has their own set of friends, family members and friends must be invited separately for each kid, and adding content or making any sort of changes requires users to toggle between each child’s account. This is going to change. With the upgraded site, since you’ll login as the parent, your Dashboard will allow you to input content for each of your children without changing screens. Since your friends will be centralized around your identity (rather than your child’s identity), you’ll only have to invite family and friends once. It will all be much easier.
      • Enable parents to share ownership of children’s profiles - Frequently, users tell us that they want to enable a spouse or a grandparent to be a joint-administrator or manager of their child’s page. With the new update, not only will you be able to assign contributors (users that have the ability to upload photos and videos to your child’s page, but nothing more), you’ll also be able to give friends or family members full administrative privileges as “managers.” These managers will be able to update your child’s bio, invite new friends, and select additional managers and contributors.
      • Add the ability to upload video directly to TotSpot - This is a big one. Soon, you’ll be able to upload video directly to TotSpot instead of having to use YouTube or Vimeo. Each month, you’ll be able to upload up to 25 mb of footage to TotSpot. If you want additional space, starting in December, we’ll be launching TotSpot Pro, a premium service, that offers more storage. Note: To thank you for your support during the public beta and introduce direct video uploads, we’re giving away 2 GB of storage this month to all of our users. Any video you upload this month, you’ll be able to keep on your account, even if you don’t sign-up for TotSpot Pro in December.
      • Allow users to create-your-own Firsts - We get a ton of suggestions for Firsts and, though we try, we can’t keep up with them.  To make things easier, we’ve decided to enable users to write their own firsts. With the new update, when you go to the Firsts page, you’ll be able to select a “Custom” tab. On this screen, you’ll be able to write your own First.

We’re excited about these and several dozen other changes that we’ve made and hope they contribute to an enhanced overall user experience for you and to a more rapidly improving product over time. One things for sure, if something could be better, we ask you, as always, to let us know. These changes are in response to your feedback and only through your feedback will we know if we’ve done a good job.

would it be possible for you to begin to allow pictures to be downloaded in formats other than jpegs?

      JuryDuty

      Wow! What great changes!

OK, so most of the issues I asked about in your support forum are addressed here. I can’t wait!

Can you clarify how accounts will be moved over? Currently we have children’s accounts, parents accounts, friends accounts, etc. How will those consolidate? Will we need to do anything?

Also, do you still use the support forum? Just checking. :)

      JuryDuty

PS…So can you clarify a ballpark time when the upgrade will arrive? I want to hold off on uploading new videos, etc to Vimeo if it’s going to be only a couple weeks. They take a while! :)

      Michael Broukhim

@JuryDuty - the transition will be automated; kid accounts will essentially be converted into ‘manager’ (usually parent) accounts for those kids; anyone who was ‘friends’ with your child will automatically become friends with you as a manager and thus retain the permissions they had before. And, yup, we still do use the support forums…will get to your questions there too - been a busy few weeks :) …thanks for baring with us!

@sara dowell - it’s something we can consider, though jpeg really works best from the standpoint of conserving bandwidth / storage…is there a particular format you’re looking for?

      Michael Broukhim

@JuryDuty - we definitely expect to be up within that time frame :)

I just wanted to let you all know what an amazing job you are doing. I have 14 month old triplets and our family is spread all over the country. Your site has enabled everyone to watch the babies grow and see what they’re up to now. I am so excited about the updates you are planning, but appreciate your hard work regardless. Without totspot, my photo printer would be on fire and I’d have serious writer’s cramp! Thank you so much!!!!!

      Lia

The best one is the possibilty to upload my videos directly to TotSpot!Wonderful!!!

      JuryDuty

      @Michael–Whoo-hoo! Can’t wait!

I echo the other’s comments that TotSpot is SUCH a great resource. Before finding it, I tried SO many places for showing off my kids videos, pictures and info to our family, but the privacy and development just wasn’t there. TotSpot is outstanding for parents. Thank you!

@Lia–100% agreed. Well, that and the fact that user accounts are more streamlined. That will make it much easier to use.

      Jen M

These are great - thanks you!
Any plans of helping us less creative moms use TotSpot to easily create real scrapbooks and baby albums? My son is almost a year old and although I’ve done a superb job on TotSpot, he has no baby album. I need your help! :-)

      Michael Broukhim

@Jen M - yes, definitely in the cards; we are working on something there :)

      Allison Taffe

Sounds like some great improvements coming! Very excited about the ability to upload video right to Totspot and also about creating our own firsts! I also would love help with a baby album- Totspot is great, but it would be even better if I could turn it into a baby album keepsake!

      Melanie

      These are great changes!!

Thanks for continuing to grow and make Totspot better!

      Catrin

I love the changes. It is much more user-friendly and it solves the issues I have been experiencing! Thank you! And thank you for a great site.

      Brandon

Thanks for the updates! Will we be able to send journal updates via email or Twitter sometime?

      Sally K

Hi! All our friends and family are freaking out that they can’t log on now. Are you sending them an email letting them know they log on differently now? Also one other issue: when I email a friend to add her to the site, she then has to wait for me to “accept” her as a friend, which is so confusing to her … she ended up trying to logon all weekend, to no avail, until i saw that i had a friend request on Monday. it didnt make sense to me that she had to go through all that, since i was the one that sent her an invite in the first place.
thank you soooooooooooooooooooooooooooo much for being SUCH a great site; am esp. thrilled not to use YouTube anymore.

      Kate

Hi, I came across info about your site in one of the parents magazine. I’ve signed up and I think it’s great. It has most all of the fields that I want to remember as a mother of 3 boys.

I just have a few questions. My boys are 6, 4 & 1 now - so I would like to go back and enter all the past information - but it will be quite a job. I guess I’m wondering if there’s chances of this website not being around? Will it charge a fee later? How does the company make it’s money in order to host this site? Does it sell my information?

I suppose I just want reassurance that after I go through all the time of entering my information into this great website - will it be around for a long while? If it does go away- will I be able to get all of the information I entered backed up [ or should I make a backup myself somewhere? I would hate to lose all the precious information that I enter.

      Thanks so much,
      Kate

      Michael Broukhim

@Brandon - right now journal entries automatically get sent out as notifications to your friends on TotSpot; we are considering possible Twitter integrations.

@Sally K - we did send a notification to all users about the changes underway; we know there will be some initial period of confusion for some users, but we hope we can get passed it as seamlessly as possible. Definitely let anyone know they can get in touch with us at hello AT totspot.com for any assistance.

As for sending friend invitations; if the user signs up using the same email address that you invited them with, they should automatically receive the friend request upon signing up…unfortunately, when they sign up with a different email address, there’s no way for us to maintain security and automate the request. Does that make sense?

@Kate - we most assuredly intend to be around for a very long time, but to assuage any concerns, we currently have a robust API that allows developers to create applications to export the content that you upload to TotSpot (with your permission). Beyond that, we are very committed to DataPortability and ensuring that you have full ownership and control over your content; we will come up with more ways for you to backup, print, and export your content to other environments in the near future. It’s one of our 3 promises (read about them here:

      Corin

I tried to upload a quicktime video to my daughter’s site directly from my hard drive, and when I click on the arrow in the middle of the video, it says, “Video not found.” is this a problem with my format or with the site?

      Adam (TotSpot)

Corin - Not sure exactly what the issue is, we’re going to look into it and get back to you as soon as possible.

      Thanks,
      Adam

      Nakia

there used to be a page where I could see a list of the friends I invited to totspot, I can’t find that page now. Does it still exist?

      Michael Broukhim

@Nakia - we’ll have that back up soon! Sorry for the inconvenience!

      Something to say?
