Birth Order and Season Affects Health, More?

adamkatz on July 29, 2008

Today’s AOL front page has a story that I’m not sure I totally believe:

Everything from your birth order to the time of year you were born can have an impact on your current health. Summer babies are more likely to be nearsighted than winter ones, but they’re also at a higher risk for suicide. Firstborns are more likely to have asthma and a higher IQ, while younger siblings are more likely to face less harsher punishments.

I’m skeptical (perhaps they are mistaking correlation/causation, ignoring alternative causes). Make up your own mind - read the full story, here.

It sound like a bit of a stretch. A lot of the percentages were 5% or less. A January baby 3% more likely to have mental disorders? Come on. Some of the stuff was obvious: alcohol, smoking, premature…but time of year? Much like astrology can fit most persons in some way, this article is similar.

Something to say?
